How Does Full-Grain Leather Get BETTER With Age?
This is the part that sounds impossible until you've experienced it yourself. Synthetic wallets deteriorate. They crack, peel, and fall apart.
Full-grain leather ages, and there's a massive difference.
The first 6 Months: The Break-In
The leather starts off stiff but softens over time. It starts conforming to your pocket, to the shape of your cards, to how YOU specifically use it. This isn't wear and tear, this is the material becoming custom-fitted to your life.
Year 1-2: Character Starts Developing
Natural oils from your hands interact with the leather. The areas you touch most develop a subtle sheen and the color deepens slightly. Over time it becomes more supple without losing any of its structure or strength.
Year 3-5: The Patina
This is where full-grain leather becomes something special. A rich patina develops, darkening and smoothing in patterns unique to how you use it. You can see the outline of your most-carried cards. The edges are worn smooth. It looks distinguished, not damaged.
Year 5 and Beyond:
The densely-packed fibers that make full-grain leather so tough keep doing their job. The wallet maintains its function even as it develops more character. Many quality leather wallets at this stage look BETTER than they did new. Synthetic materials can't do this. They only break down whereas full-grain leather actually improves and get's better with time.
